What is Silicone?

Silicones, also known as polysiloxanes, are polymers that include any inert, synthetic compound made up of repeating units of siloxane, which is a chain of alternating silicon atoms and oxygen atoms, frequently combined with carbon and/or hydrogen. They are typically heat-resistant and rubber-like, and are used in sealants, adhesives, lubricants, medicine, cooking utensils, and thermal and electrical insulation. Some common forms include silicone grease, silicone rubber, polishing compounds, cosmetics, and of course silicone caulk or adhesive.

In nature, Silicon occurs in the form of Silica, and is reduced in the lab to form Silicon metal, which is further reacted in a complicated and fascinating process to form Silicone.

Silicone vs. Silicon

Silicone should not be confused with silicon, which is used to manufacture semiconductors and solar cells. The term “silicone” refers to a family of manmade compounds, of which silicon (Si) is a key element.
